MP5120_mp 5220_mp5420 ?high speed, +/-9v, rail - to-rai l input-output op amps MP5120_mp522 0_mp5420 rev. 0.91 www.monolithicpower.com 7 12/9/2009 mps proprietar y information. un a u t horized photoc op y and duplication prohibited. ? 2009 mps. all rights reserved. operation description the mp512 0/mp5220/ mp5420 are high-spee d, high slew ra te, rail-to-rail input-outpu t operational amplifiers. these devices can o perate up to 50ma outpu t current an d 20mhz bandwidth. input the mp5 x 2 1 can operat e with inputs from rail to rail. it does t h is through t he use of two differential pairs. a trad itional pnp differential p a ir is used from 0.5v b e low the negative rail to 1v below the positive rail. at that point the input is switched to a npn differential pair to operate up to 0.5v above the positive rail. the transitio n from one input differe ntial pair to t he other can cause distortion. in puts near th e rails can a l so cause distortion an d degradatio n of other sp ecificat ions. output current rating the mp5 x 2 1 can sin k o r source 50 ma. it can provide high values of peak current, and much reduced value of average current. w hen the output voltages are nea r the rails th e ability to provide current will be r educed. output po w e r make sure that the rms power is such that the die junction tem perature will remain below 125oc. pow e r req u irements the mp5 x 2 0 family o perates from a voltag e supply, of vs and ground, or from a vs s p lit supply. dual supply range is 1.6v to 9.0v. psrr and noise a common fi gure of merit is the psrr (power supply reje ction ratio). the psrr i s a measure of how much noise gets from the supply rails int o the output. notice that t he psrr fal l s with increasing frequency. in order to have good psrr the ri pple voltages and freque ncies of the systems switching powe r supplies should be measured. if the psrr i s not accept able, inductors ca n be inserte d in series with the power supply rails t o provide improved psrr. also make sure there are no transients cr eated on the power supply lines when the mp5 x 2 1 load current chan ges suddenly. this can damage the part. transients in addition to the ripple and noise on the power supplies, t here are also tra nsient voltage changes. t h is can be caused by another device on the same power supply suddenly drawi ng current or suddenly sto pping a curr ent draw. the design eng ineer should insure th at there are n o damaging t r ansients induced on the powe r supply lines when the op amp suddenly changes current delivery. layout ground pla ne connect the opamp to a ground plan e rather than ground traces for very low impedan ce. if this is not possib l e then make the ground traces as fat and short as possible decoupling high performance devices such as the mp5 x 21 , with high sle w rates and high current s, need large decou pling capa cit o rs. these should be placed as close to the supply pins a s possib l e. use ground and power planes to make these decoupling capacitors a s effective a s possib l e. if that is not re alistic then make the ground and power traces as thick an d short as p o ssible.
